Uses
Here are the tools, languages, and other items I use on a near daily basis.
What is this page?
This page lists everything that I use in my day to day life as a developer. I exclusively use MacOS, but most of the software I use is found on multiple platforms. While I do use my personal laptop at the office, this does not include any of the other hardware that I'm assigned to use for work (mostly because while it's functional, it's not all that great) If you are inspired to make your own /uses page, consider adding it to uses.tech by Wes Bos!
Hardware
- MacBook Pro (mid-2012 Retina) - She's old, but she's still got it where it counts. Now that Apple has dropped support for this model, I'm looking to replace her in the next year or so, maybe when the Apple Silicon hardware drops in 2021.
- 2 x Dell P2719H 27" 16:9 IPS Monitor - I absolutely love these monitors. Great for development, gaming, or just surfing a little Reddit in my down time. 1440p (or higher) resolution is the only way to develop.
- Logitech K750 Wireless Solar Keyboard - When I first bought this keyboard, I almost returned it. I thought the keys were a bit spongey. Over the last few years, I've grown to absolutely love it, and not having to replace batteries has been a godsend.
- Logitech M705 Marathon Mouse - I've used this same mouse on my desktop for at least 7 years, and I can only remember changing the batteries once. This thing goes forever!
- iPad Pro (12.9" 1st Gen) - Another oldie, but goodie. I mostly use the iPad for drawing / digital artwork, but it gets the job done, and as of this writing, is still supported by Apple. No need for a replacement just yet.
- iPhone 11 Pro Max - I've been using iPhone since the 1st generation, and I don't plan to switch anytime soon. Amazing phone, amazing camera ... just awesome.
- Apple AirPods (1st Gen) - I like them. They're not the best quality audio, but they work.
- Apple Watch (3rd Gen) - I wear it daily and love all of the health tracking that it does. I do plan to upgrade to the 6th gen as soon as they are available.
Software
- Visual Studio Code - I didn't want to make the switch, but once I finally gave in, I've got no regrets. Great lightweight editor, and with the right plugins, it's pretty useful.
- Firefox Developer Edition - Long time Chrome user, but one day I set out to use Firefox, and so far, I haven't gone back.
- PocketCasts - Used on my phone as well as my laptop for all of my podcast listening. Bonus points due to CarPlay support!
- Notion - Recently I started getting into the idea of heavy note taking and using my computer more and more as a second brain. Hoping to write a few posts on how I use Notion in my day to day life.
- Procreate (iPad) - My iPad drawing application of choice.
- Ulysses - My longform writing application of choice. I'm trying to write a novel, but so far, it's just not happening.
- Postman - Absolutely required for API development and testing.
- Spotify - For those times when I want a little music instead of a podcast.
- BaconReader (iPhone) - My Reddit client of choice. It was a great alternative to Alien Blue once it was no longer supported.
- Waze (iPhone) - My favorite way to get around town and avoid traffic problems.
